A new general social security benefit is being introduced in May 2026. The general social security benefit replaces the current unemployment benefits provided by Kela, which are the basic unemployment allowance and the labour market subsidy.
The general social security benefit is paid to an unemployed jobseeker who is not entitled to earnings-related unemployment allowance or who has already received the maximum term of earnings-related unemployment allowance.
The amount of the general social security benefit is equivalent to the current basic unemployment allowance and the labour market subsidy. In 2026, it will be €37.21 per day, or around €800 per month.
