This article explains what you need to do when you return to work after a period of unemployment or a layoff.
Notify KOKO and the employment officials through Job Market Finland of your change of employment status as soon as you find work. Remember to also report your change of status if you start working on a fixed-term, part-time or occasional basis.
When you start working
- Notify the employment officials through Job Market Finland that you have found work.
- Notify KOKO of your change of employment status in your next daily allowance application. There is no need to send a separate message.
- If your new job is a part-time job or a full-time job for a period of less than two weeks, report the number of hours worked and your wage in your daily allowance application. Keep your job seeker status active, as you may still be eligible for an adjusted earnings-related unemployment allowance.
- Respond promptly to any enquiries arising from your application.
How does starting a job affect the earnings-related unemployment allowance?
Full-time work for a period exceeding two weeks:
- Payment of unemployment benefits generally ends when a person starts working.
- Submit your final application up to the day before you start work.
- Remember to indicate the start date of your employment in your daily allowance application.
Part-time or occasional work or full-time work for a period of less than two weeks:
- Keep your job seeker status active, as you may still be able to claim an adjusted earnings-related unemployment allowance if you meet the other eligibility criteria.
- Continue submitting daily allowance applications. Note that your application interval may change.
- Receiving a wage generally reduces the amount of the daily allowance but does not automatically mean the end of allowance payments.

When you return to work after a layoff
If you were laid off from your full-time job and are resuming work, notify the employment officials through Job Market Finland and KOKO in your daily allowance application of the end of your layoff.
Your daily allowance payments will end when you resume your normal work schedule.
If you start another job while laid off
Remember to also notify the employment officials and KOKO of any other job you start while laid off.
- If you only work part time, you may still be eligible for an adjusted earnings-related unemployment allowance.
- If you work full time and for an extended period, you will most likely lose your entitlement to a daily allowance for the duration of your employment.
